“Housing Challenges” in Halifax, especially on the peninsula, include:
- the supply for a mix of options (e.g. for short term and long term rentals; for home owners; for institutions (e.g. universities and military); for co-op and publicly owned housing such as NS
Housing Authority units)
- the affordability of options (e.g. middle income; low income; irregular income; long term fixed income; practically no income; homeless)
- the infrastructure for options (e.g. approval process; transportation; utilities; financial; renovictions; fast changing rental rates; “rent control” in NS; lease agreements), and
- the reasonable anticipation of demand for various housing options and flexible contingencies
Meaningful responses to “Housing Challenges” in Halifax will at times involve actions at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government, - sometimes working together - including elected officials, staff, civil servants, and those they employ or contract to execute projects.
Meaningful responses to “Housing Challenges” in Halifax will at times also involve actions of those in the private sector (e.g. developers, builder contractors, (individual, community, institutional, and corporate) building owner - operators, landlords, various service providers, and those that finance these activities).
To discuss these challenges and how to make it better, will be our invited group with experience as:
- elected federal, provincial and municipal representatives
- professional public and private sector staff
- private sector developers and rental housing providers
